GIS and spatial data

We recommend you organise geographic information system (GIS) and spatial data training for your LPA.

What is GIS and spatial data?

A GIS is a system that creates, manages, analyses, and maps all types of data.

GIS connects data to a map, integrating location data (where things are) with all types of descriptive information (what things are like there). This provides a foundation for mapping and analysis that is used in science and almost every industry.

GIS helps users understand patterns, relationships, and geographic context. The benefits include improved communication and efficiency as well as better management and decision making.

Why it’s important to ODP

Spatial data is the foundation for all of the datasets that are required by the data standards team and all of them will come into contact with a GIS at the very least.

Whether you are the person actually cleaning and manipulating the data or not, it’s important to have an understanding of what this data is and the challenges and opportunities it presents.

Why it’s important in working life

Being able to display real time data on maps that fit a specific area, or being able to automatically create maps based on preset conditions, enhances the abilities of planning departments to deliver interesting insights quickly.

Spreading this ability more broadly across planning teams removes bottlenecks and frees up both the GIS specialist to work on more challenging problems and the planners to focus on the real planning problems.

Organise GIS and spatial data training for your LPA

  1. Review the list below of other LPAs that have done this training. Reach out to any LPAs you’d like to hear more from.
  2. Choose the provider that you’d like to work with and organise the course. You can use your funding to pay for this.
