Kick off your project

Hold a project kick off session with everyone involved. This helps make sure that everyone is clear on the foundations you have in place and is ready to deliver positive outcomes for the planning system.

Your agenda for the session can vary, and it’s a good idea to consider the needs of your team and context, and adapt as necessary.

Quote from a council who wished they held a kick off earlier in the project

“I wish we had an internal kick-off with touch points in the LPA to ensure the right people were involved at the right time and show them the software products that you aim to adopt e.g. ICT, legal, procurement and commissioning.”

(Duncan Miller, Newcastle)

Aims of a kick off

There is no set formula to a kick off, but at the end of it you want to ensure you:

• Know each other so that you can work well as a team

• Understand each others’ roles and responsibilities on the project

• Understand your context, and which stakeholders to involve

• Understand how you will monitor and escalate risks and issues

• Have a plan to get cracking with

Suggested structure

The below PDF provides some ideas for running a kick off session. Feel free to adapt this to your own context.
