Who we are

We want to transform planning from an approach reliant on documents and physical maps to a data-driven, digital system. We are a community of Local Planning Authorities who are working together to look at how we can collectively improve planning services.

We are creating a movement of forward-thinking products and services that will collectively push toward designing better digital planning services to benefit everyone.

Our goals

  • better equipped planning teams
  • better served residents, applicants and planning professionals
  • better technology to support faster planning decisions
About us

Our story

Open Digital Planning started in 2015 with the launch of the Local Digital Fund. It was aimed at supporting Local Planning Authorities directly to build innovative products and services along with standardising data. This started our two products, Back Office Planning System (BOPS) and PlanX.

In 2022, it was decided that the only way we could effectively scale the adoption of these products and services was to build a community of Local Planning Authorities and then build legislation around the standardisation of data. We have also expanded the programme into PropTech and are working with companies that are developing new products and services that we can bring into our family.

Our focus

“There's great work being achieved and there's much to be said for government, developer, and local authority collaboration, and the innovations and improvements that derive from this.”
